The following is the answer:

Answer by Garth
Terry Pratchett’s City Watch books (part of the Discworld series) are both humorous and have a lot of action

In order these are
Guards, Guards (http://www.amazon.com/Guards-Terry-Pratchett/dp/0061020648 )
Men at Arms
Feet of Clay
Jingo
The Fifth Elephant
Night Watch
Thud!

However I’m not sure if you will be able to get them from a school library. If you can’t, try The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents (http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Maurice-His-Educated-Rodents/dp/0060012358 ) or Only You Can Save Mankind (http://www.amazon.com/Only-Mankind-Johnny-Maxwell-Trilogy/dp/0060541873 ) by the same author

You might also like:

The Artimis Fowl series (http://www.amazon.com/Artemis-Fowl-Book/dp/0786808012 ) and the Supernaturalist (http://www.amazon.com/Supernaturalist-Eoin-Colfer/dp/078685149X ) by Eoin Colfer.

The Alex Rider series (http://www.amazon.com/Stormbreaker-Rider-Adventure-Anthony-Horowitz/dp/0698119347 ) and Power of Five/Gatekeepers series (http://www.amazon.com/Ravens-Gate-Book-one-Gatekeepers/dp/0439679958 ) series by Anthony Horowitz.

All of these contain a lot of action but are also very tongue in cheek.

And a few more serious suggestions

WWZ by Max Brooks (http://www.amazon.com/World-War-Oral-History-Zombie/dp/0307346609 ). Despite the premise, there aren’t many laughs to be had. Lots of zombie action though.

The Tomorrow Series by John Marsden (http://www.amazon.com/Tomorrow-When-War-Began/dp/0439829100/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1285999272&sr=1-1 ). The first book starts out very light hearted but quickly become a much darker and serious story. The action scenes in this series are some of the best I have read.
