Sarcasm, bluntness, stupidity, etc. What makes you laugh in books?

Examples are welcomed and appreciated. It doesn’t have to be from a novel that has already been published, it can be from one of your own.

Sarcasm and Bluntness for sure. Randomness is another thing. And when people ask questions you don’t expect. And when people totally miss the obvious, although in those circumstances i usually yell DUH first. It’s really hard to explain the things I laugh at, so that’s all I’ll tell you.

Irony and witty dialogue

I love sarcasm and humour. It really is fun to read a book where I smile or laugh. I feel closer to the characters as all of my friends are sarcastic/humorous. I really fell in love with the character Jace in The Mortal Instruments because he reminds me a lot of a good friend of mine and my husband. And there are so many examples, but one of my favourite Jace quotes would have to be:

“I am a man” he told her, “and men do not consume pink beverages. Get thee gone woman, and bring me something brown.”

I’m pretty sure I use this all of the time. My husband uses it all of the time ever since he ordered a pink beverage at a restuarant and I teased him.

I love it when two characters you’ve followed through a series get into a totally random, hilarious fight over something serious or stupid. Maximum Ride is a great example. The two start fighting over a drug, and the girl, Max, who took the drug told the boy she loved him while she was loopy. They started fighting and laughing at the same times and I laughed myself.

I find in novels and movies that a character’s personality and traits are what make humour that is interesting and smart. An perfect example (in my opinion) is C-3PO in the Star Wars trilogy. Although it is in movies, his intelligence, politeness, lack of ability to communicate normally with humans and humbleness is absolutely amazing. I know that is a terrible choice of words but if you watch or have watched the movies you know what I mean.
