Once there were two little girls. They were mostly very good and obeyed their mother, but they had a big weakness for indulging in sweets.
One day, their mother gave them some money and asked them to run down to the market and pick them up a soup bone for dinner. “But do NOT get any candy!” she warned them, because they only had just enough money to get the soup bone.
So the little girls ran off to the market, but as soon as they passed the candy shop, they couldn’t resist the temptation, so they ran inside and spent all the money their mother had given them on delicious caramels, licorice, and taffy.
“That was delicious!” they said. “But oh no! Mother will be so disappointed in us!”
The girls were very sad. They hated to upset their mother because they loved her very much. They decided to take the long way home through the cemetery to avoid confronting their mother as long as possible. They walked slowly through the quiet cemetery, trying to think of a solution to their problem, when all of a sudden, they saw a small white bone lying on the ground. They screamed and started to run, but suddenly, they had an idea. . .
“Mother said she wanted us to bring back a soup bone. . . but she never said where it had to come from. . .”
Before they could change their minds, the girls grabbed the mysterious bone and ran home quickly, their hearts pounding all the way.
Later that night, their mother and father raved over the delicious soup. “We ought to send you to pick up the soup bones all the time now!” they said. The girls smiled weakly and asked to be excused. They hadn’t touched their soup. Their parents figured they must be getting sick and sent them to bed early.
The girls lay in their bed for hours, trying to sleep but feeling a strange nervous feeling. The clock downstairs chimed midnight, when suddenly, in the dead of night, the girls could hear a faint scratching sound coming from outside. Terrified, they listened to the noise, when a horrible rasping voice called softly up to their window.
scratch, scratch, scratch. “I’m outside your house. . . Why’d you take my bone?”
The girls looked at each other with looks of pure terror. Could it really be?
They heard a click and the noise grew louder.
scratch, scratch, scratch. “I’m inside your house. . . Why’d you take my bone?”
The girls huddled together, shivering with terror.
scratch, scratch, scratch. “I’m on the first step. . . Why’d you take my bone?”
The voice was beginning to get more insistent.
scratch, scratch, scratch. “I’m on the fifth step. . . Why’d you take my bone?”
As the girls grew more terror-stricken, the voice grew angrier and angrier.
scratch, scratch, scratch. “I’m outside your room. . . WHY’D YOU TAKE MY BONE?!”
The girls were sobbing, wishing with all their hearts that they had never disobeyed their dear mother, that they had done exactly as she had said. They trembled as the doorknob began to turn. . . to click. . . they saw a dark shadow in the hallway, getting slowly closer as they heard a scratch, scratch, scratch.
“I’M INSIDE YOUR ROOM. . . WHY’D YOU TAKE MY—?!”
But suddenly, who should appear but. . . TONY THE PONY! Tony the Pony, the super-wise and magical flying horse who flies on the night winds and comes to help all children in distress. Tony zoomed in through the window and slammed head-first into the malevolent shape, knocking him back into the hall. The girls heard the sounds of an epic battle and muffled snarls, but soon, the fight was over and they heard the shadow running down the stairs, out the door, and back to the cemetery, sniveling with defeat.
Tony walked victoriously over the two girls, who clapped and cheered, “Hurray for Tony!”
“Aw shucks girls, it was nothing. But just remember, always obey your mother from now on! Only good children are allowed to fly with me on the night winds. Can you promise me that?”
“We promise, we promise!” they exclaimed.
Then Tony took the two girls on his back and flew them out on the night winds, and they never disobeyed or lied to their parents ever again
