How do I get my country cats to be happy in the city?
Hi,I did the following:
Question: How do I get my country cats to be happy in the city?
I used to live in a rural area, but I moved to a city. My cats are miserable! I can’t let them outside (lease restriction & VERY busy major highway). They keep trying to escape the apartment, even though we live on the 2nd floor. I try to spend more time with them, buy treats and toys, but they are clearly not happy. Any advice?

I would give them lots of plants and cat toys. Also cats like catnip. Maybe if you keep them high on catnip all day they will forget the lovely country. Sorry I don’t have any more tips for your kitties…

They sell window shelves for cats. Why don’t you get a few to put on your windows. The cats will have a view of all that is going on outside and that will help. In time, they won’t miss the lack of freedom as much. Also, take them for walks! They can be leash trained. Our first cat was leash trained and loved to go on walks. It will just take some time and patience.

This is a tricky one. First, Be sure you are giving your cats extra attention due to the change. Next, have you ever considered actually building a “Play area” ? What I mean is, you could build tunnels, ramps, etc. and also have window seat(s) put in. Cats love this. You can have a carpenter to come in, and build small (sized for cats) tunnels. This will really keep them amused, and definitely not bored. Buy catnip. Catnip does have different reactions to cats, some cats become very laid back, while others get very excited. I hope that these suggestions will help you, and your cats.

Good luck. I don’t think you can do to much for them to replace their getting to roam free.

Try training them to walk on a leash. If you have a yard, you can buy fencing designed to keep cats in your yard. If you have a porch, maybe you could fence it in with chicken wire and they could have access to the porch. Maybe a cat condo would give them something to climb on and be entertained by. If you give them enough time, they will get used to living in the city. Cats are really territorial creatures and when they get used to living in a certain area it can take them a long time to get used to something new. They should adjust eventually!
Hey there,
Try this ok,if you have window’s then get a Cat Pole that is like 3 to 4 Tier high they maybe a lil’ expensive but well worth the trouble, then put it by a window that looks out and down lol…but do not let them out on the veranda/deck for they may jump, high strung country cat’s have been kwown to do just that to get out,so do what this say’s and maybe you will find they will be happier, also try gettin’a leash’train them around the house etc to walk with that, then later on maybe you can take them! for a walk, maybe not all at the same time lol..but maybe eventually they will calm down, talk to them a lot!
you can carry cat’s in a large bag and sneak them out into your ride/car..as you have to do this anyway at some point as what if one get’s ill and you have to take them too the Vet? so do this as well, make sure you leave enough room for the cat/cat’s to breath k!
anyway try the Scratchy Pole 1st make sure it is 3 to 4 tier’s high, this is important, this way the cat’s can climb up there and look out and still see the world they seem to be missin’in thier mind’s go by (get me)
they can also play on there and have competition’s etc, keep’s them occupied, you can get one’s that have creep hole’s in them as well..so they can hide from one another as well…
ok well give that a go and see how it work’s out…
hope i have helped out..
