Q&A: If sitcoms are filmed before a live audience, what do they do about bloopers?
… When the actors have to perform the scene again? Wouldn’t the audience get bored with the jokes and the celebrity guest who walks in?

they are filmed infront of a live audience but not air straight to tv.

It Hollywood magic. They capture the laughter on the first one or two takes then they can edit it with the takes that meet the director’s approval. I was actually in the audience for a game show and even the audience had to do 3 or 4 takes of the opening of the show where we were panned clapping and smiling and waving. There’s also typically someone in the crowd who is paid to start laughing at certain points because laughter is contagious so it gets others laughing too. So now I hope you understand the difference between filming before a live audience and a show airing live.

Sometimes it dilutes the reaction. On an audio commentary for the Goodies, they’ve stated where they had to do something funny again and the audience reaction was still laughter but it wasn’t as raucous as it would have been if the first take went smoothly.
The live audience also affected their performances as well. Again, there was a section in one of their episodes where the audience wasn’t reacting and so the actor pushed it even further OTT forgetting he had an audience at home who was going to watch this later on…
