Q&A: Is it important to do what makes you happy or something that would make the others’ happy?

For example, I’ve always wanted to be an actress. I feel guilt, because my mom has always wanted me to become a teacher or a lawyer, and I know my thoughts make her upset. The thing is that, even if I make money out of being a teacher, I know I am never going to love my work as much as I ‘d love acting.
So what’s better? Doing something that will make you happy, or disappointing others and fail achieving what they consider important?

you have to be true to you. i spend a large part of my life trying to be what my family wants and its just not who i am, its not me. so i say you have to find something that you love. if you love it then the people who love you should love it. i mean are we all supposed to want nothing more for our family’s and friends then for them to be happy ???

Why does it have to be either or? Making people happy is never solely altruistic and you can make people happy by being happy yourself.

Your *real* question is whether or not you want to cross your mother. Your mother won’t disown you if you don’t follow her dreams for you exactly. After all, at some point you have to start living life for you, not for your parents.

There are always ways in which to compromise. Most actresses work at other jobs until they get their first, “break”. Going to school and majoring in education and law and minoring in dramatic arts is not difficult proposition. Considering that you can teach dramatic arts in high school or english literature which involves the study of a lot of plays such as by Shakespeare. Law also involves a great deal of theatrics when you watch some of the ways in which lawyers must get their points across to the judge and the jury.
Making yourself happy is what matters at the end of they day. As a mother I would be ecstatic knowing that my children were doing something they enjoyed and getting paid for it. When you do something that fulfils your spirit there is also an excess of happiness that overflows and postively affects those around you. Good luck, and reach for those stars.

Doing what makes me happy is what matters to me. Your mother has chosen how she is to live her life, and she should respect your decision to become an actress. It probably scares her that you want to do this because of all the pornography that she has probably seen in the magazines and on television and in the theater. You can help to put her at ease by doing your school work and getting good grades, and behaving yourself in a ladylike manner. Get a good education in a field so that you can have something to fall back on. Choose respectable clothing to wear. None of that floozy stuff. Your mother is only trying to look out after your best interest.

Each person has his/her own capacity to make him/herself happy. If more people followed this, the world would be a better place, in my opinion. If making others happy suits some, fine. But if you want to do your own thing, that’s your perogative. I’ve often found that people who try to make others happy usually wind up sacrificing their own happiness, which is contradictory; the worst part is that the people they’re “helping” probably could have done it all on their own…

I think it’s important to do what makes you happy because after all it is your life. However, if you can, do both.
