Question: Is it ok for a black comedian to make white jokes, but not ok for a white comedian to make black jokes?

A friend of mine and I recently got into an explosive argument because he thinks its ok for any non-white ethnic minority to make white jokes….but if a white person makes jokes about non-white people its racist. Personally I think its racist either way and both sides should either stop making the jokes, or just learn to laugh at themselves more and the stereotypes being made fun of… He beleives this because of the history of “white supremacy” in treating other races as lower…slavery etc…so thats why its *ok* for ethnic minorities to make these anti white jokes. I think that while a white person making ethnic jokes may be more *hurtful* culturally speaking, even a black person making a white joke is hurtful because it just perpetuates the cycle of hostility/ignorance etc… Btw…hes of Jewish ethnicity.

It IS both sided-racism, but following the history of black racism, some people think that by white-people making black jokes that they are encouraging the whole ‘white-black’ division. Because there has been no real racism AGAINST white people, then some people may find that this isn’t quite so harmful. Maybe black people just want a little revenge. In my opinion this isn’t the way to go about it and they should all just lighten up

racism means ‘hatred or intolerance of another race or other races’, so if you’re just joking around with some friends it should be alright. because you aren’t being intolerant or hateful.
or maybe your friend likes making racist jokes but cant take the joke himself so he uses the racist excuse.

I definitely agree with you. I make black jokes all the time in front of black people. A lot of times they get angry, but I just tell them it’s a joke and they should lighten up. Then I’ll say a white joke just to make them happy. They usually are still angry, so I tell them go pout in a corner.
