Question: Is the US Coast Guard considered a joke by the rest of the military?
Just wondering since you never hear anything about the Coast Guard deploying to Iraq or Afghanistan or anywhere else. Also they are a part of the Department of Homeland Security and not the Department of Defense. Therefore, do members of the other military branches (I would imagine the Navy more than any other) consider the Coast Guard just a joke. Also, are they even actually considered to be military? Not trying to make fun or anything, just wondering since one of my friends joined the Coast Guard.

They don’t deploy overseas because their job is to GUARD OUR COASTS. Yes, the y are considered military, and no, they are not thought of as a joke. The Drug interdiction alone are more dangerous than duty in Iraq. You think THOSE guys aren’t heavily armed?

10 year Naval veteran…we never had anything bad to say about them…and you are correct..they are part of the DOD…and they are in some over seas cities because not all countries have enough help in that area

Your statement is in error, the USCG is a part of the DoD, the link below proves that. Further proof of that is the Congressional Medal of Honor is only awarded to members of the military.

the seaplane tender Ballard anchored just off Guadalcanal.”
The Coast Guard is a military branch that is seconded to DHS during times of peace, but its permanent home is in the DoD.
There is plenty of inter-service rivalry, but don’t for a minute think that those marines on Guadalcanal weren’t thankful that a Coast Guard member was willing to come get them out of the firefight.

Dankohner1, clearly you don’t know the history of your own branch of service. The Coast Guard is a part of the Department of Defense, they are seconded to DHS during times of peace. Look up the DOD website, you will notice that it includes the Coast Guard.

No, Coasties are not considered a joke. They only recently became part of the DHS, before that they were part of the Department of Transportation. They are actually a part of the DoD, but only during times of war, or when otherwise ordered by the President. They risk their lives everyday defending the nation from drug runners, and they are the first responders when a ship is in distress. They also rescue dumb boaters who think they can handle the high seas. They are a vital part of the nation’s military.

Unfortunately, all branches of the military show some sort of resentment to the other branches. This derives mainly from the desire to be “THE BEST”. The truth is that ALL service men, no matter what branch, are equally important. Although the Coast Guard is not exactly “infantry”, they still do their part in protecting our nation.
I think it is funny that I came across this question because I have recently experienced a relevant situation.
My husband is ARMY, and very HOOAH, if you know what I mean. The ARMY is a very stubborn and confident branch, and of course, think they are “The Best”. While I do not agree with my husband, he stills thinks that all other branches are inferior. But more so than the rest, the Coast Guard are the ones most “mocked” by the ARMY. Especially since they received the title of “Department of Home Security”.
So anyway, my husband’s little sister recently graduated highschool and made her big announcement that she was joining the military. My husband was ecstatic until she mentioned that she was joining the Coast Guard. Oh man did that get my husband started! It was a very hectic dinner and ended with his sister leaving in tears.
I know, hubby is an A-hole lol.
But yes, sometimes the Coast Guard is laughed at by other branches, but that goes many ways. It is inappropriate and incorrect, however egos run strong in the military.

Theye are no joke, they have a serious job to do and many of sailors own their lives to the Coast Guard.
I have occasional contact with them in Alameda, Petaluma and old Ft. Baker were they have a Rescue Boat to drag dumb MF’s out of harms way.

One of the guy’s I met at Ft. Baker had just come back from a year in Columbia working drug interdiction. They are right now in the Gulf just off Iran and the Gulf right off TX, LA and FL as we type.
They are a picky bunch, not a single chunky monkey in the group from what I have seen. Had a chat with a Lt. Commander Chaplain on Friday in Petaluma..nice guy..offered to help me unload my truck.
In 9 years of Army life I never even heard a Coastie joke…..don’t want to piss off some guy that might save your sorry a$$ now would ya?
Only went to the Haz mat Response guys on old Hamilton Field once….place was pretty lacking oin bodies as most were off someplace helping another country with a spill of some type…not an oz. of press coverage on that.
Normally see one Helo a day while they patrol the SF Bay too. Funny how many don’t notice what is there daily.

No the coast guard is not a joke and they are a highly respected and regarded branch of the military. The are part of the department of homeland security but do play an active role in the middle east. They can get deployed to provide security for the ports and harbors in the middle east and can be in active combat roles if assigned to it. But for the most part, they stay at the US and work on security for are ports, harbors, and shores. They go after drug smugglers and protect ships from modern day pirates. They also have their own special forces. Many people join the coast guard for experienc into law enforcement becuase it is the branch that most closely resembes it and is the only branch that is legally allowed to perform law enforcement duties.
William is completely wrong! The USCG is part of the Department of Homeland Security. The USCG is not part of the DoD! Also Scott is wrong, the USCG does deploy over seas. The Coast Guard has been in every major war America has been in since 1812. Actually the Coast Guard is very highly respected. What you are thinking of is, most people don’t think about the Coast Guard when thinking about the military. The truth is the Coast Guard is part of the military.
You don’t hear anything about us being in Afghanistan because we don’t bother blowing money on public relations because we need it to support our folks that are in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Kuwait, Bahrain and Kyrgyzstan.
Right now we have over 500 Coasties in the Persian Gulf.
Yes, some consider us to be a joke – but they are the ones that have never actually seen us in action or overseas. When I spent a year in Kuwait and Iraq back in 2003/4, the number of people that just gaped at us when they saw the Coast Guard uniforms was hilarious.
And, yes, we are considered to be an official branch of the military by US law. We’ve been involved in every war that the US has been in since the Revolutionary War. We drove most of the landing craft that hit the beaches on D-Day, and almost all of the Riverine Patrol Boats in Vietnam.
Try Googling some Coast Guard history – we’re there, we’ve always been there, and we’ll be there tomorrow. We just don’t think it’s important to holler to tell everyone how good we are.
Thats just a running joke they do have a few units that deploy overseas mostly in the southren ports of iraq they work just as hard as the rest of the military
We had the USCG in Viet Nam and during a storm when a larger ship came back in to port, a 40′ cutter went OUT. I admire the members of the U.S. Coast Guard. When people are stupid at sea, those men and women go out in all kinds of weather to save them, while YOU are sitting on your hind parts messing on Y/A. I have never made fun of the brave men and women of the UNITED STATES COAST GUARD.
