Q&A: How does the medical community regard dentists?

Do dentists have an image problem? I know this would only be joked about over drinks or the water cooler, but I’d like to know what I’m getting into. Off the record, are they looked down upon as medical school flunkies or people that didn’t have the mettle for a career in medicine? Try to be honest and not p.c..

I think it depends on the country. In the states, dentists make a lot of money so their image is ok. In France, it used to be that those who had failed in med school would switch to dentistery but even that has changed and I think that nowadays, dentistery is a “good” profession in most places.

My father is a physician (board certified in a few specialties also).
There was a running joke about “if you can’t be a medical doctor, be a dentist.”

Another was the only requirement of being a pharmacist is the ability to count.
