“What are you not allowed to bring” – Your recruiter should give you a list. There is very little you should bring, they will give you everything you need.
“how short does your hair have to be” – If it is too long they will fix the problem.
“are you required to shave your legs or not” – Have no idea about this one, however I doubt it would be required.

Hair length does not matter at least for Marines. But you need to be able to plaster it up in a bun. Short hair is easier to deal with in boot camp considering your time frame to get ready. Do not shave your head it is against the UCMJ to shave your head, people must be able to tell the difference between a male and a female. Cut it short but not too short.
In the USMC shaving is not required in boot camp, its a luxury to shave your legs. Most Drill Instructors do not give a shyt in less they focus on hygiene. Each platoons drill instructors have their thing they combined want their platoon to be focused on.
It doesn’t matter what you bring it will be taken away and you will be issued new stuff. The reason is uniformity, everyone looks the same, it looks nicer that way.
I do not know what branch you are joining I am using my experience from the USMC.

you are not allowed to bring:
- Contact lenses
- weapons
- vehicles
- obscene/pornographic material
- playing cards
- tobacco products
- non-perscription drugs
- prescription drugs (only allowed w/ a letter from doctors)
Your hair as a woman must be above shoulder length. My recomendation is get it cut on your terms before you leave because when you get there they dont care if it looks good or not…you just get it cut.
as for shaving your legs….yes they do give you a chance to do so…you are even allowed to bring those innexpensive disposible shaving razors….but you have to realize that hygine time is very scarce and very few wish to spend thier shower time shaving their legs…maybe the day before graduation…but other than that use you time wisley.
good luck

While the specifics differ between branches, there are some general rules.
For example, you can BRING makeup, you just can’t wear it. (They let us put a little on for our official pictures, but that was it.)
I suppose that other than drugs, games (electronic or not), porn and weapons, you could bring a whole lot of things. But believe me, you don’t want to.
Your recruiter will give you a list of what you can and can’t bring. Don’t bring gum, candy, magazines, or anything else they can use to single you out and pick on you.
You can bring a Bible (or Koran or Torah or whatever), and while you CAN bring pictures, I would advise against it, because the instructors will use them to rag on you.
Since in every branch, your hair has to be off your eyebrows, off your collar, no more than three inches in bulk, present a neat and professional appearance, not interfere with different types of headgear and gas masks…and you only have a few minutes to get totally ready every day…you can see why so many people just go short. It’s less hassle.
As for shaving, it’ll just be pure luck if you ever have time and if your instructor allows it.
Good luck.
