Q&A: What is the room filled with crates that celebrities are stored in on comedy cartoons?

On shows such as Family Guy and Robot Chicken, there have been celebrity jokes. For one reason or another, the celebrities turn out to be evil, and at the end of the show, they are seen being rolled away in a wooden crate with a huge warehouse type room filled with millions of wooden crates similar to the one the celebrity is stored in. In Family Guy, this happens to James Woods. In Robot Chicken, I believe it has happened numerous times. So where does this running gag come from??
