What’s a good classic scary Halloween movie to watch with pre-teens?
Hi,I did the following:
Q&A: What’s a good classic scary Halloween movie to watch with pre-teens?
For Halloween night with my 8 & 10 yr old sons I’d like to watch a classic old black and white “horror” movie. I’d prefer something themed for Halloween (ie: vampires or mummies or witches are better than the Creature from the Black Lagoon).
I’d like something that holds up well (ie: won’t be a total joke). Vampires jumping out of coffins is ok, cutting up their victims with chainsaws is not… so anything from the 50s or 60s should be tame enough.
If there’s a good HD or Bluray transfer available, all the better, since we’ll watch it on the big projector.
Any fond memories of scary Halloween movies from your youth?

Try popping in some episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000. They take the old scary movies from the 60s and spoof on them. Lots of laughs.

House on Haunted Hill (the old black and white one not the remake) is one of my favorites, it has no gore in it at all and it’s about ghosts.
You could also try:
Frankenstein/ Bride of Frankenstein
The Orginal Dracula
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Haunting
I Walked With A Zombie

Hocus Pocus (with Bette Midler)
The Tingler (There is one scene where it shifts to color that is pretty scary, but they probably see scarier things on TV.)
The Blob (the original)(It might be alien, but it’s a big, blobby critter moving around, and it’s not gory like the remake.)
Dracula (original)
Frankenstein (original)
Bride of Frankenstein
The Wolfman (original with Lon Chaney, Jr.)
Actually, they might have fun with the old Abbott & Costello movies in which they meet various monsters. They’re definitely kid-friendly, and the monsters are authentic because these are Universal films, with the same people who made the originals.
I used to watch Chuckie on Halloween but if you want to watch a black and white movie I would recommend “Land of the Living Dead.”
