Q&A: Why is there only bad things on the news?

I can’t watch the news without getting depressed- yes we need to be informed but really does every single line have to make us scared to go out the house or worry about our children playing on the street?
It’s madness!
We need some grounding and festive cheer and I think abit of Home Alone should do the trick!
Bring on the campaign for happy news readers and happy news to go along with it!

because good news requires no action to be taken. If things are bad or something bad happens, we inform the public for the purpose of spurring action

And you notice how they always have something so important to tell us……..at 11. I mean, if it were SO important, tell us now! They just want ratings. And unfortunately, people will tune in if there’s a story about 3 people dying in a house fire then if 3 people were saved in a house fire. News has turned into entertainment shows.

Happy news has been tried (in Dallas TV station for one); after 2 days their audience dropped out of sight. Show was cancelled after 1 week.

I totally agree. Everything on our news just talks about people getting killed in accidents or shootings. They should focus on happier things. I think tragedies are more easily found and available and captivate people more, even thought they are horrible things.

Not all news is bad, while it’s true that the majority of news is about tragedies, murders, etc. Most of the news stations occasionally report on good things happening. But, the majority of reported news is bad to keep viewers interested because, if the news stations showed only good news, viewers would be bored quickly.

Well because I guess thats what people watch…but I will say that you make a good point…though when bad things happen It makes me realize how lucky I am so in return it makes me grateful as a person….and I cherish the things that I have. Which is good if I’m feeling down, cause It makes me realize that I could be worse off

Because good news does not attract an audience so that stuff can be sold to that captive audience. It’s commercial TV, with the emphasis on “commercial”.
